Exclusive: Drew from My Transsexual Summer chooses her top five dresses for Christmas

Tonight is the final episode of the amazing Channel 4 series, My Transsexual Summer. If you haven’t been watching the show, I cannot recommend it highly enough. Seven incredible (and incredibly brave) people from around the country have very different life stories, but one crucial thing in common – they’re all on a gender affirmation journey.

I don’t want to talk too much about the show (except to say that you will laugh, cry, stress out on their behalf and feel heartbroken one minute, wonderfully uplifted and beaming with pride the next), because this post – as ever – is about fashion. And when I decided to track down one of the show’s participants to contribute to Fashion Detective, Drew – a fellow Northern lass with a penchant for big hair, bodycon dresses and a healthy obsession with The Only Way Is Essex – was no1 on my list.

So I was beyond excited when Drew said she’d love to make an appearance here, choosing five AMAZING Drew-style dresses that will definitely hot-up your Christmas celebrations…

Drew works a fabulous maxi: “Perfect for Christmas parties – especially the fancy ones.”

When it comes to fashion, Drew says her style isn’t about trends: “It’s about having fun and enjoying clothes. I love the military look and in the pic below I’m actually wearing a dress that I turned into a top. The result is very Lara Croft with a ‘porn star’ edge. It’s funky and different – so it pretty much sums me up. I’m not going to be able to wear this when I’m 40, so I’d better get started now!”

But Drew told me that she’s not always done up to the nines: “If I’m going out for a quiet drink with friends I like to keep it casual. A pair of skinny jeans, a top and leather jacket work well, you look fashionable but still warm in the winter. Hair and make-up are my biggest accessory, so I still look dressed up.”

And dressing up is what this particular post is all about, so I challenged Drew to find five killer party dresses for Christmas/New Year – and did she ever come up with the goods…

Bandeau dress with feather skirt at ASOS, £250. Drew says: “This just reminds me so much of the title sequence in Sex and the City where Sarah Jessica Parker is in a tutu. If you can bare the cold like me, this is deffo a dress for the winter. You could always team it up with a nice faux fur shrug.”

“Jessica” dress by Amy Childs, £75. Drew says: “I’m very over the top with my look; big, bleach blonde hair, three sets of eyelashes, loadsa tan…so obviously I’m gonna love TOWIE. Amy’s dress is a modern version of Jessica Rabbit’s. There’s not too much on show and it would work for any season.”

Charlie Python bodycon dress, £12 at boohoo.com. Drew says: “I used to only wear earthy colours as they work for any occassion and you can take this dress from day to night, teaming it with skinny jeans and then ripping them off to go to a club. Animal prints are a must this Christmas.”

Green cut out bodycon, £20 (sale price) at River Island. Drew says: “This colour is mouth-wateringly lush. It’s clingy and would be great on someone with curves. A bodycon is always my first choice because they were designed for a reason – to make women look hot!”

Silver and black bodycon dress, £185 from liquoriceboutique.co.uk. Drew says: “Obviously this is on the expensive side, but it’s just a classic yet sexy dress and the colour is complimentary to the skin. I think anything by Hervé Léger is a must. All his dresses are sexy and they fit the female form so well.

With huge thanks, love and luck to Drew.
