Mr. Selfridge red velvet dress

My Mr. Selfridge obsession continues apace – I’m desperate for Agnes and the sexy French window dresser to get it on (isn’t he lovely?) And did anyone else swoon (apart from those two gossipy shop girls) when ballerina Anna Pavlova made her entrance to the store in beautiful red velvet? (And trust ol’ Harry to be wearing a matching tie, the cheeky beggar).

I love velvet, and it’s perfect for this time of year. We’re not in spring territory yet – far from it – and adding a touch of party glam to your look, without going over the top, is a great way to make a style statement. I wish we could still get away with something long and flowing in this fabric, but in the absence of turn-of-the-century modesty, a midi length dress or long sleeved skater style cut will do just nicely, thank you very much.

February is an excellent time do a velvet-flavour winter swansong; I’m v tempted to wear one of these lush pieces for my birthday, which is fast-approaching…
