Sixties Sunday – H&M retro style

1960s style floppy hat and maxi dress

I asked for some input from my Facebook friends this week, re: the Sixties Sunday look. One of my dearest and oldest friends, who just happens to be a wizard wardrobe manager and stylist, suggested it was time for a maxi – and who am I to argue?

After she’d made the suggestion I popped into H&M on the off chance they had some good headgear to make a maxi even more late-60s looking. Not only did they have the perfect wool floppy hat, they also had a gorgeous new, shirt-style maxi dress in stock that reminded me of a classic retro full length frock I bought there a few years ago.

The dress I’m wearing today is that very same maxi. It’s something of a statement, so – as you can imagine – I haven’t been popping down to Sainsbury’s in it. But I did wear it once for a mate’s festival-themed birthday bash and if the world would let me, I’d probably wear it every day.

I know there’s something of a 70s trend doing the rounds, but this speaks late 60s to me.: the 70s was only cool for the first couple of years and then disco and Lycra ruined everything (just in time for me to be born – thanks fashion karma).

With the dress and hat speaking volumes,  I’ve kept the rest of the look pretty simple with a yellow belt and killer heels that are so impractical I could only make it as far as the back garden for the shoot. They are blue suede-effect shoes from Topshop (past season, natch). They were once photographed at London Fashion Week so, appaz, they are cool. Cool or no, they make this very long dress work perfectly.
